The genre of crime films is not easy to define, because you can subdivide it in different subgenres.
The best known is definitely the crime film about police. Very popular ones in cinema were “Dirty Harry” and “The Untouchables”. Series are “Crime Scene” and “Derrick”.
Another subgenre is the prison film. For the time being best known example is the series “Prison Break”. Movies are “escape from Alcatraz” and “The Shawshank Redemption”.
Hood films also belong to the genre of crime. They are about the african-american urban issues. Examples are Boyz in the Hood, Menace II Society and Hustle & Flow.
The most successful crime film was “James Bond”, which falls in the category “Espionage”.
