War

The story line of that kind of film is about war, sometimes in the background, sometimes in the foreground.

They act out different scenarios, like the outbreak of the war and the ending, even a formative incident or a story in the foreground, while the war is just a background story.

A very popular and successful war film about World War II is “Das Boot” from Wolfang Petersen. World War II is the most frequented war in the movie scene. There are more than 100 films about. Other successful examples are: Band of Brothers, Downfall, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Life a beautiful, Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan and Stalingrad.

World War I is by far not such a popular topic in movies like World War II. Three well known examples are: All Quiet on the Western Front, A Very Long Engagement and African Queen.

The probably most successful movie till this day is “Gone with the Wind”. The movie version of the book from 1939, which acts in the American Civil War, got 10 Oscars.

There were also made a lot movies about the Korean War, but they weren’t so successful in Europe.

Movies about wars in Africa are “Tears of the Sun” (Nigerian Civil War), “Hotel Rwanda” (Rwandan Genocide between Hutu and Tutsi) and “Black Hawk Down” (Somali Civil War).
