Hollywood
Hollywood is the center of the American film industry and is often classified as a synonym for the whole industry.
Main feature of the in California situated district of Los Angeles is the Hollywood Sign.
Built in 1887, the first film-studio in Hollywood were opened in 1911 and further 14 followed in the same year. But why just Hollywood? There are many reasons for that: One is the advantageous weather, because at that time there were no spotlights which produced artificial light.They had to make the film outdoors or in studios with a glass roof and that’s why Hollywood has a big advantage. The days are longer and so there are more hours of sunshine. Furthermore the distance to New York was crucial, because there were the “Motion Picture Patents Company”, which put pressure on companies which didn’t belong to them.
The two biggest film companies of the United States and also of the world are accommodated in Hollywood. In 1923 the Warner Brothers built the Warner Brothers Entertainment in Hollywood and already in the thirties they achieved big success with the Looney Tunes, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny.
While World War II, in the year 1942, the worldwide known blockbuster “Casablanca” showed up. Newer and today’s success are: Lethal Weapon, Superman, Batman, Harry Potter and Matrix.
The second big film company in Hollywood are the Universal Studios. We owe them movies like: King Kong, Spider-man, The Mummy, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Back to the Future trilogy and Meet the Fockers. The Universal Studios also produced television programs like: CSI, Desperate House wifes and Crossing Jordan.
Another well known manufacturing company is Miramax Pictures, they produced movies like Chicago, Scary Movie, Good Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction etc.Films like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters INC, A Bug’s life, Rataouille and The Incredibles were also produced in Hollywood. All by Pixar Animations Studios, which are specialized in computer animation.
